Arts & Culture Podcasts

Hi Everyone,

Listening to podcasts has been a big part of my daily routine for the last 5 years. While I’m creating art, cooking or commuting you can bet that I’ve got a podcast going that is making me laughing or teaching me something new. For those of you who don’t know what podcasts are, they are audio programmes akin to talk radio. Unlike the radio however, a particular podcast can be accessed anytime on your phone or computer and are usually not live broadcasts. As things start getting back to normal around Waterloo Region, I thought I’d share some podcast recommendations that will hopefully inspire you in the studio and in your everyday life.

Here is a list of 15 arts and culture pods that have taught me a lot about the business of art, being an artist, art history and the creative process:

1)    Art Curious
All about the lesser known parts of art history including true crime/fine art crossovers and deep dives into amazing artists who haven’t yet gotten the recognition they deserve.

2)    The Art History Babes
This podcast was started by 4 young women while they completed Art History MA’s. Now graduated, they continue to make episodes about contemporary and historic people and moments in arts and culture.

3)    A Piece of Work
Abbi Jacobson (from Broad City) takes you through some of the most prolific work at the MOMA and chats with artists, curators, restorers and her comedian friends in this 10- episode series.

4)    Art and Labor
This podcast is all about being an arts and culture worker in the gig economy and social justice organizing within the arts.

5)   Deep Color
Interviews with contemporary artists

6)    Frieze
Conversations and lectures about contemporary art

7)    Humor and The Abject
Funny and insightful interviews with artists and cultural workers + some seriously interesting sound collages. The host is no longer making new eps but there is a lengthy back catalogue.

8)    Momus Podcast
Canadian arts and culture pod that explores the big issues facing artists today through interviews and discussions with arts and culture workers, curators and community organizers.

9)    Other People

13) Clever Creature + Think Again
Clever Creature is a new podcast project by Jason Gots where he attempts to write a new song and story based on an algorithmically chosen word then chats with an interesting and creative person about the creative process. Before this, Gots hosted a pod called Think Again which was not directly about art or creativity but often wandered into those realms.

14) Las Culturistas
A comedy podcast about all things pop culture.

15) The Artwonk
All about navigating the art market.

Happy listening!
