Residencies

Residency opportunities take artists and curators away from their usual environment and obligations to spend time in a new environment. Residencies provide a time of reflection, research, presentation and/or production. Exposure to new materials, equipment and people can stimulate new ideas and artwork.

The specifics vary, but a residency usually means somewhere to work, maybe live in for a set period of time and sometimes a stipend or money to live on. A residency can last anywhere from a week to a year, be local or international, in an industrial, educational or business setting.

In return the arts person may be expected to teach, donate a work of art, hold an exhibition, or simply work in an industry, business or classroom so that people there are exposed to an artist, their thought processes, problem solving skills. They can watch the artist at work and talk to them.

Industry and manufacturing have found residencies invaluable in stimulating creativity, productivity, new product design and reframing existing problems. For example, the Kohler sink in your bathroom may be more of a work of art than you realize. The company known for kitchen and bathroom fixtures has opened its factory floor to artists for the past 40 years, allowing them to share ideas and techniques with factory workers so that both can be inspired.
